Cookies N' Cream Buns

These cookies n' cream buns are a new take on classic cinnamon rolls. Instead of cinnamon and sugar, the flavor comes from Oreo cookies. With cookie crumbs in the dough and the cream mixed into the filling, I knew I had to try these out to see if they tasted as good as I expected.
These buns are a fun twist if you're looking for cinnamon bun texture without cinnamon bun taste. Between the chocolate dough and sweet cream cheese filling, these quick and easy buns are definitely a new favorite recipe of mine.

HOW TO MAKE COOKIES N' CREAM BUNS

You Will Need:

For the Dough:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (plus more for rolling dough)
  • 3 tbsp white sugar
  • 2 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter (plus more for greasing baking dish)
  • 15 Oreo cookies (cream removed)
For the Filling:
  • 1/2 cup (about) cream cheese
  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • about 1 tbsp confectioners sugar
  • cream from 15 Oreo cookies
For the Icing:
  • 1/4 can sweetened condensed milk
Directions:
  1. Starting with all of the dough ingredients - whisk together dry ingredients (also add in crushed Oreo cookies).
  2. Melt butter into milk on the stove.
  3. Pour butter/milk mixture into dry ingredients and mix with hands or spatula until combined.
  4. Flour your surface and kneed dough for 1 min until it becomes a smooth ball.
  5. Let dough ball sit in a bowl covered by a damp cloth for 15 min.
  6. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  7. Work on your filling - use a mixer to combine all of the filling ingredients until smooth.
  8. After the dough has been sitting, roll it out into about a 10x14 rectangle.
  9. Spread melted butter across the whole rectangle, then spread filling mixture on top of the entire thing.
  10. Roll up the dough tightly the long way into a log shape.
  11. Cut log into 9 pieces.
  12. Butter your baking dish, mine was 8x8 in.
  13. Place rolls evenly, with a bit of space between each.
  14. Bake in oven for 25-30 min until a tiny bit golden on edges... take out, cool for a few minutes, pour on icing and enjoy!

MY REVIEW
This recipe was simple, fun, and tasted good too! I've always been an Oreo lover, and was very excited to try these out. In the end, I thought that the Oreo taste could have been a little stronger. It was definitely there, but I would have liked more. The dough tasted like the Oreo cookie, but the filling tasted more like cream cheese and vanilla than it tasted like Oreo cream. The filling needed to amp up the cream taste and that would have made it perfect. The texture of the bun was spot on, flaky on the outside but gooey on the inside, just as it should be. Overall, I give this recipe an 8/10. It was a straightforward recipe and tasted great. With a little more Oreo taste, it would have been a perfect 10/10.
